Is It Worth It?

Image
Dating again and again and again     I’ve been told love is the greatest medicine. I’ve also been told that medicine is poison in small doses, so I’m not so sure about that prescription.      Relationships plague social media and unfortunately just about any public space due to those couples that are a little too proud of their love for one another. I myself just ended a relationship, and it’s certainly made me ask myself if it’s even worth it. Did I enjoy the relationship? Yes. Am I happy afterwards? Nope. I decided while writing this that I shouldn’t cloud my judgement, so I asked a bunch of people at my school, dating or not, if it’s truly worth it. They’ve convinced me; they are worth it.       First and foremost, dating leads to meeting new people, and with that, improved social skills. When I was just a couple years younger, I couldn’t ask people out for the life of me. Had a crush for years, tried every Sunday to ask her ou...

You're So Immature

Image
The vague judgments of maturity     So childish. You laughed at the sex joke. You got giddy when your favourite artist dropped an album. You nerded out about a topic that interests you. Shut up and grow up.      But we shouldn’t shut up!       I just finished rereading The Little Prince and it reminded me of our overabundance of seriousness. “We shouldn’t act like children; we aren’t children!”, but if we ditch every childlike behaviour we have, what are we to enjoy? We’ve created a box for ourselves by the name of “maturity”. This box has no explicit size, no objective location, and no concrete definition. It’s all up to the people around you to decide if you’re in it or not. Following these unclear guidelines is a clear path to being miserable. The many things deemed “immature” are just subjective human interests no different from the things deemed “mature”.      To begin, one of the worst offenders of being “imma...

Proud Of What?

Image
The failures of being proud      “Be proud!” I hear hurled from a window. “Be yourself!” Responds the street. No matter where I go, I’m told to be proud.      Yet is pride really the be all end all of things? These days, we’re all vying for some kind of identity, so to follow a movement that tells us to be proud seems like an easy in. However, we’d be better off without fanatic pride.      First of all, there’s the queer community, who’s basically claimed the word “Pride” by now. As a queer, pride month festivities are too much. Sexual orientation shouldn’t be a big deal, that’s the whole point of the movement. By putting ourselves on a pedestal, we’re separating ourselves. We need to integrate, not separate. As for the straights, they’re either blindly supporting us or blindly insulting us. What we need is better education. No pride required, it just brings separation.      Second of all, there’s Canadian pride. There’s ...
